Flies
True flies are insects of the order Diptera. These insects use a single pair of wings to fly. This order contains an estimated 1,000,000 species including horse-flies, crane flies, hoverflies and others. Flies have a mobile head, large compound eyes, and mouths designed for piercing and sucking. Their wings give them great manoeuvrability in flight, and claws and pads on their feet enable them to cling to smooth surfaces.
House flies are the most famous of 300 000 species of flies and are found all over the world. They can survive in all habitats where people can survive, because they are accusctomed to the life near humans. Human flies are pests - they easily reproduce and carry numerous diseases. People apply various insecticides to kill them, but they are still very plentiful and even resistant to some of those chemicals. Conversely, house flies are beneficial because they accelerate recycling process by decomposing organic waste.
More than 100 pathogens are associated with the house fly, including Salmonella, Staphylococcus, E. coli and Shigella. These can cause disease in humans and animals, including typhoid fever, cholera, bacillary dysentery and hepatitis. Cleanliness is critical to controlling these pests, but accurate identification is essential for successful fly control.
Female flies lay approximately 500 eggs in a lifetime, in batches of about 75 to 150. The eggs are white and are about 1.2 mm in length. Within a day, (maggots) hatch from the eggs. They live and feed on (usually dead and decaying) organic material, such as garbage, carrion or feces.
